School and Classroom Visits
Want a schoolwide assembly about GRIT, failure, trying new things, and how being a scientist made me a better writer?
Or maybe something a little more intimate. A classroom writers workshop. We can do one of my preplanned ones or work on whatever it is your students are currently learning.
Maybe you’d just like a Q&A?
I do all of that. Listed below are my preplanned presentations. Each take 45 minutes to an hour depending on how many questions the kids have. But as a former speech kid, I am very adept at thinking on my feet and being flexible and can address just about anything if you ask!
The Great Big Word Experiment: How being a scientist made me a better writer (This is all about growth mindset, failure, grit, and how to learn something new.)
From Vanilla to Rocky Road: Writing Emotions Your Reader Will Feel! (Perfect for class setting and writers workshops. We’ll discuss metaphors and similes, show don’t tell, and other great writing tools! Very customizable if you let me know what you’d like me to focus on.)
How to Build a Story (By far, my most popular class. Very interactive and a lot of fun. A great way to introduce the elements of story in a way your students won’t forget.)
Everyone’s a Writer! (A kick-off class to help everyone get comfortable with writing and sharing their work. Hands on.)
I do free 20-30 minute Skype visits with any book club or class that has read my book!
I love to teach and am an engaging speaker. I’ve taught writing classes at the Storymakers conference in Provo, Utah in 2017, 2018, and 2019 to rave reviews. My classes, blog posts, and tweets about theme have gained attention from many in the writing and writing craft community. I would love to come and present at your writing conference. My favorite topics include:
Infusing Your Story With Theme: How Planning With Theme Creates Something Timeless
The Need for Sad Books in Middle Grade
How To Write About Tough Topics in Middle Grade
The Art and Science of Creating a Symbol
